The Taupo congregation in NZ held a July Mataariki winter celebration and participants wrote winter Haiku poems, led by April Smith.
Hungry for sunlight
Waiting in endless dark
Morning please come soon
Something healing here
Calling back all that once was
World keeps on turning
Water crystals shine
As sun on snow does sparkle
A soft world of white
Lithe stars beckoning
Ruru sounds her mournful bell
Pohutukawa wakens
Southern wind coming
None too early: hibernate
Rebirth soon to spring
The winter wind blows
And clears the leaves off the path
Naked trees allow sunshine
Silver shine of stars
Gleaming in the frozen air
Like holes into heaven
The crackle of fire
Violet orange dancing
Descends to ashes
See the morning frost
Hear birds chirping on the trees
Look ! Sun is out !
Dark is here, light gone
Slowly dark will be away
Light will return soon
The days are short now
Longer days to come our way
Nature blooms long days
Chilly evening
Hot fire toasting marshmallows
Happy, content, sleep
Te Hotoke
He mango huka
He ra makariri
He hau kanada
Snowy mountains
Cold days
Resolute winds
